• Our Journey

Our first car competed in Sunrayce 1999, which started in Washington, D.C. and finished in Orlando, Florida. We built our second car and raced in the American Solar Challenge in 2001.

    Two engineers with a vision.

More than a decade later, two students decided to bring solar car racing back to UVa. This time around, they wanted to build not only a car, but also a unique learning platform for the UVa community.

    Building the team.

Weekly Solidworks and LabView workshops, team meetings, and welding and machining lessons, as well as a strategic leadership structure ensure that our members are well-equipped to build a competitive car.

    Building the car.

Our car has been fully modeled using CAD software and we will continue to improve upon our design through CFD simulations and wind-tunnel testing.

    A growing team.

After a year of developing our team and our 11 core members into leaders, we now have 33 students on this journey.

We have members across 11 different majors around the university who contribute unique perspectives.

    Racing aspirations.

As we have started production in March 2017, our solar car is on its way! We look forward to racing in the Formula Sun Grand Prix in 2018.

  • Teams

To run a project this large, we have separated our responsibilities into these four sub-teams, check out what each of the teams does!

    Mechanical Team

The mechanical team is responsible for all non-electrical design and simulation. Therefore, the mechanical team is divided into multiple sub-teams including: chassis and roll-cage, steering and suspension, aero-body, and cockpit. Due to the correlations and co-dependencies that these components have with one another, all of these teams must collaborate both with each other and with the electrical and construction teams to ensure a seamless final product. Each member of the team is trained in the principles of mechanical design, 3-D design, and structural simulation so that each component of the car is designed intelligently, for ultimate safety and performance under even the most severe conditions

    Operations Team

The operations team is the backbone of the solar car team, and we are broken down into finance, sales and marketing. Finance is in charge of managing our financial capital, including grants, sponsorships, and purchasing. Sales involves reaching out to potential sponsors, actively spreading awareness of the team and maintaining sponsorship relations. Last but not least, the marketing team is the creator of our team's brand image, they come up with original content to engage audience on social media platforms, as well as documenting the journey of our team.

Overall, the Operations team also acts as the bridge that connects the different sub-teams by managing general meetings, recruitment, team bondings and internal communications.

    Electrical Team

The Electrical Team handles all electrical and electronic components of the car. This team’s main priorities are maximizing the power drawn from the solar array, efficiently supplying power to the car’s electrical systems, providing the driver with proper interfaces, ensuring safe charge and discharge of the batteries, and transmitting data from the car back to the rest of the team. We will also be hosting weekly hands-on workshops to reinforce electrical knowledge pertinent to our project.

    Production Team

We are responsible for constructing the mechanical and structural components of the car, including the aerobody, chassis, suspension, roll cage, etc. We research, develop, and execute methods to create unique components and participate in the design process with understanding of buildability and material properties.
